Solo – Steep Turns

I headed out to the Otaki training area and I commenced with left and right standard turns followed by steep turns on my own.

Once again I had this dialled in so I decided to really crank it and whipped the aircraft into the steep turn as if I had an oncoming aircraft about to hit me. What an awesome rush to see the response of the 172 and all the training kick in. I had the aircraft at 45deg in a second and the nose just at the right pitch. I was very happy and after a few more left and right turns decided to try a left followed straight into a right steep turn.

This was even more fun and I was hearing all sorts of Top-Gun quotes in my mind.

I did three more full figure of eights in the steep turn and was grinning like a maniac.

I returned to base after 30mins just fizzing!

The training area was very busy today however all students had a good situational awareness as I advised one aircraft that was in my immediate location that I was going to climb 1000ft higher and operate over the sea. Immediately they replied that they would remain at 2500 and work over the land. A great result and I was rather pleased that I knew what to do and actioned it.

Another decision was for me to do an orbit over Waikanae river mouth as a152 was on long final. That gave us both good separation and we made good landings without being too close.

So another fabulous day of aviation. I am getting more and more comfortable in the cockpit and making good decisions during flights. Can’t wait for next week!
