Beagle Airedale Flight

Something a little bit different this time round.

I was invited to come along on a ferry flight in a Beagle Airedale. One of only 2 flying in NZ

This old girl is owned by my flight instructor Clemente Castro.

The plan was to assist a fellow pilot to ferry ZK-RDL a First Strike Bobcat from Masterton to Waipukurau approximately 135km NE of Masterton to its new owner

However being that time of year in NZ the weather was not playing nice and the cloud cover was just not lifting. After a lot of amateur weather forecasting we all agreed to abort the attempt and just play around locally in the Masterton Training Area.

The Beagle is a wonderful old girl with all the classic aircraft smells and groans.

At 57 years old she still looks great and flys nice.

Clemente gave me some stick time and I did some figure of eights without too much trouble.

She has a constant speed prop so that was interesting seeing how that functioned via manifold pressure.

She handles like a bus compared to the sportscar that is the Tecnam and it does tend to think for 2-3 seconds before banking. But I soon had the hang of it.

Though I didn’t get to fly cross country I still had a blast. Any day around planes is a good day.

Until next time.
