Blog – Check Ride FLWOP 29/09/2024

Its been a few weeks of bad weather so today’s mission was to demonstrate consistency to my CFI in forced landings to prove consistency.

My CFI stated that we would fly to the training area, then on to Bennetts Hill before returning to Hood Aerodrome.

After a nice standard take-off on 24 seal, we climbed up to 3000ft heading to the training area.

My CFI then set me up for the first forced landing from 3000ft.

I  had no problem in creating a plan, selecting a suitable field, and advising my CFI of the 1500 foot area and 1000ft marks.

I went thru the process with confidence and skill, keeping my head and reciting my intensions.

I was cramming it a wee bit, so I flew wider to get the “look” and spacing sorted, taking control of the aircraft with authority. I was hitting my marks at correct speed and height. I kept the “script” going in my head and flew the aircraft to a good landing.

On the second attempt I was checking my speed, trimming well, relaxing my grip on the stick, checking that I was “within the white arc” for speed before deploying flap and deploy flap in stages once I was certain to make the field. I was starting to think ahead and planning which made the whole thing much better. It was so good to have this essential procedure sorted.

Once we had completed another FLWOP at Bennetts Hill, I radioed intensions and set up for an overhead join back at the airfield.

I flew a great line, descending to 1900 feet agl ready to join. However I didn’t descend to circuit height until I was turning downwind. Urgh! You descend on the non-traffic side mate! I was also too fast at 68kts rather than 60kts in the circuit. (Way too much FLWOP speed in my head!) and laned way down the runway rather than go around.

These issues were discussed and corrected during my post flight debrief.

With all that sorted, my CFI cleared me for solo flight in the training area. This is a huge milestone in my training and I was so happy that all the hard work has paid off.

Time to do some solo work!

Until next time…..
