Blog – FLWOP (Forced Landing Without Power) 02/06/2024
Today was another intensive flight on forced landings without power. However, my old nemesis “inconsistency” came to play.
Flying was way off today. Whilst I was not squeezing in on my approach pattern and could get my heights and speed dialled in, I was holding the stick tightly again so when I looked down, I was pushing the stick forward. gaining speed, and loosing the flightpath. I was having a mare and not doing well, and was not doing the procedure at all. I had to break down the entire process, and drill into my mind each part to get even close to correct. Very frustrating!
However, I was better at choosing a landing site today. I would choose one, then stick with this choice. I still had issues with where I was in relation to my High Key and/or Low Ky area. I got overwhelmed on a few attempts which didn’t do my Mojo any good at all.
I totally forgot the method of orientating into wind, and then choosing a field. I was not having a great flight. I really need to work on this.
Again, some things I did do well, however the PPL standard is much higher than I am currently demonstrating. I know this stuff, but yet again I have a brain fart on the flight and things go to custard. Not good enough as this procedure can be the difference between an adventure that everyone goes home from, or loosing your life. Its essential I get my skillset up to standard. I’m not going to let this go until I’m satisfied that I can achieve this safely, every time.
I need to really get my head in the game. Hit the books, view lots of video, and do some “chair flying” to get my head around this..
This is the last but the most important aspect I need to nail. Once this is sorted I believe I will have this procedure well sorted.
Strategies for that nugget will be practiced again next flight. “Rinse and Repeat” time!
