Blog – FLWOP & Glide Approaches 06/07/2024

Another week and another solid days training.

Today was a repeat of two weeks ago with the full forced landing without power sequence and more glide approaches practised.

My FI had me do a circuit with a glide approach, and threw in an engine failure after take-off  which I performed well. Nice one!

We then climbed up to 3000ft heading to the low flying area and practised the full a few forced landing sequences, ensuring I hit my 1500ft and 1000ft marks. I worked hard on spacing and turning in towards the selected field,  however I still tend to fly too close and loose the field under the wing a few times. Urgh! That was putting the aircraft into the wrong position for landing at 500ft.

However I was doing it more right than wrong so not a complete disaster.

I’m way more confident with S-turns as I did some homework and realised that the Tecnam’s stall speed is quite low with 15deg of flap an 0g of turn (around 35knots). So I have a large margin doing 68kt S-turns.

Once we had completed several FLWOP, I radioed intensions and set up for an overhead join back at the airfield. My FI then pulled an engine failure right over the field. I lowered the nose then had to think hard “I’m lower than 1500ft AGL so head for the 1000ft point” .

I turned left over the middle of the field, then onto downwind, hitting the 1000ft point exactly at 1000ft AGL and with perfect spacing. Wow!

I then turned into base checking both speed (68kts best glide speed for the aircraft), checking my aim point, and keeping the spacing to the threshold.

On final, I again confirmed I could make the field, put in my last lot of flap, and landed nicely. What a great way to finish!

What a good, challenging session. Things are getting better, more consistent, and I achieved another good result. My FI was very happy with my flying again today.

My next mission is to do this with the CFI onboard to confirm my improvement.

Until next time…..
