Blog – Glide Approach Landings on Short Field 28/10/2023

Today’s mission was work on glide approaches. After my FI demonstrated the procedure, I set up downwind and around abeam of the threshold, my FI pulled the throttle to idle. The basic process is:
  • At onset of power loss, pitch for best glide speed.
  • Turn 45deg to the runway and select a point 1/3 down the runway and select 10deg of flap and 60kts
  • Turn perpendicular to the runway and move the aim point slightly towards the threshold. Add next stage of flap and 55kts.
  • Align with the runway and again bring the aim point forward to the numbers. Set full flap and cross threshold at 50kts.
  • Flare as required and set down smoothly with braking as required.

That’s the theory anyway….

My reality was that the first 2 landings were fine, so being cocky, I went for 3 in a row. Well the last landing was more like a carrier landing (heavy). Oh well almost a trifecta.

A great day flying again. I’m starting to really enjoy mastering flying skills in this cool little aircraft.
