Blog – Overhead Join and Intro to Forced Landing Without Power 25/07/2021

Overhead Join x 2 & Intro to FLWOP at Otaki Strip

Another fantastic winter’s day with a light NE breeze after a week of rough weather.

The outgoing journey was all about vacating the aerodrome to a specified height, making the correct radio calls at specific waypoints, and arriving at Otaki strip as planned. Whilst this is only 10nm away it still makes for a good introduction to this vital task.

On arrival at Otaki, I did an overhead join and descended to land. A go around was given by my FI and we tracked towards the coast at 1000ft.

Once there I turned left and followed a course along the coast, turning inland at Te Horo Beach and then another left level turn back to Otaki Strip. We repeated the overhead join again then climbed to 3000ft in the vicinity of the air strip.

Once safely at altitude, my FI demonstrated Forced Landing WithOut Power showing me how to set best glide speed and then leave it trimmed and glide to the first key point at 1000ft followed by the second keypoint at base to final at 500ft.

We then returned Paraparaumu via standard southern track for 34 seal. I landed well despite a 12kt crosswind on landing: no sideways movement so I was stoked.

My FI said this was one of my best flying days he has seen from me. “Happy Days!”
