Blog – PPL Exercises 12/11/2023

Today’s sortie was a mock flight test to get a baseline on how things are progressing and what I need to work on.

It’s easy to do a training flight and concentrate on one specific thing. It’s a whole other matter to move from one manoeuvre to another and nail them. This was going to be rough!

We started off with working out take-off and landing distance at maximum weight. Ah the dreaded P-charts! I find these not too bad so managed to work these out ok.

Once in the aircraft, I had to assume that my FI was a passenger, so I had to assume he knew nothing and I had to instruct him on how to get into the aircraft and what to do once in it: e.g. no smoking, don’t touch the stick or dials, stay quiet during radio calls etc. It felt really weird but that’s what happens in the real test, so I just had to run with it.

After some questions from my FI, we taxied to our run up area, and I talked thru what I was doing.

Once lined up on the runway, we started off with a short field take-off and then set off for the training area.

The manoeuvres I was asked to do were:

  • Medium turns
  • Steep turns
  • Basic stall in lean configuration
  • Power on stall full flaps
  • Wing drop stall full flaps
  • Forced landing without power
  • Overhead join
  • Glide approach and short field landing
  • Normal landing

After all this I cleaned up the aircraft and taxied back to the aero club and shut down the aircraft.

Needless to say, I didn’t pass as I had so many issues. The main ones being:

  • Fuel pump stayed on entire sortie
  • Landing light stayed on entire sortie
  • Failed to clear the area on ALL turns
  • Failed to maintain best glide speed and altitude during flight to high key point on emergency landing
  • Overshot runway on emergency landing
  • Failed to use best area to do stalls (High ground)
  • Unintentional Wing drop stall prior to power on stall
  • 2 x go around attempting glide approach
  • Speed fluctuations
  • Height fluctuations
  • Failed to stop once runway vacated on landing to clean up aircraft flaps, landing light and fuel pump

Remember Team, this was just the main points!

I was gutted that I plain forgot to do so many things. I was trying so hard to ot muck up that I mucked up even more! This is exactly why I tortured myself to do this mock test.  I’m a masochist!

So many things to work on going forward but now that I am aware of them, I can work on getting these all resolved.

Until next time…..
