Today was a nice fine day with slight winds. Perfect flying weather!
Today we concentrated on Rudder work as I have a bad tendency to forget all about using them, or not apply enough.
After take-off, we climbed up to 2500ft and headed for the training area.
My FI demonstrated the exercise of using rudder to keep the nose on a distant point when also using Ailerons. He demonstrated how a lack of rudder during ailerons makes the nose move in the opposite direction (adverse yaw). By adding in rudder , a pilot can keep the nose straight and make the flight co-ordinated. This results in a much smoother flight.
After a few “curly ones”, I had the aircraft rolling without the nose moving. This was a fun exercise and I was enjoying the training immensely. Its fantastic when you have good control on the aircraft.
After several sets. we descended to 1900ft and made our way towards the air field for an overhead join.
This was executed ok but I did get a wee bit low on my heights. However I managed to keep the circuit wide enough to do a good landing. (I do tend to squeeze in the circuit doing these.)
So, another successful exercise to try and get myself rid of bad habits. I think its working as my flying has improved the last few flights. I’ll take that. Progress by millimetres is still progress.
Happy Days!
Until next time…..
