Blog – Spiral Dive Recovery 06/10/2024
Today was another of those “anything can happen” weather days but thankfully the squalls stayed away from the air field and I managed to get a spiral dive recovery session in with my FI.
The basic procedure is as follows:
- Close the throttle
- Use the ailerons to reduce the bank angle
- Ease out of the dive using gentle back pressure
- Once nose is above horizon, check speed & ease in the power as required
More on Spin Avoidance & Recovery can be read here.
After demonstrating a few of these to my FI we proceeded back to Hood. On the way my FI closed the throttle for a simulated engine failure.
As we were about 2 miles from the field, I closed throttle, set best glide speed and headed for the 24 downwind.
Once in the circuit I set up for landing by turning towards final and reducing speed by pitching up once on final to 60kts. This was finished off with a nice landing.
I then cleaned up the flaps and lights and stopped short of Bravo holding point to drop off my FI so I could do some more solo time…
Until next time…..
