Blog – Stalls and Precautionary Landings 15/03/2025

Another week of polishing up those skills for the PPL Flight Test.

The weather today was nice with a few thermals to keep me on my toes.

After running through our pre-flight, taxi, run-ups, and take-off we flew out to the training area and ran thru the following:

  • Power Off Stalls
  • Power On Stalls
  • Wing Drop Stalls
  • Slow Flight
  • Precautionary Landings
  • Standard Landing

I was flying pretty good today. I felt good with most skills and my handling was pretty good.

I did muck up the first Precautionary Landing by rushing into things rather than just settling into the tasks. I have a really bad habit of doing that so I need to work on just slowing things down.

Once I did that, then the Precautionary was no big deal and I managed to fly so I would make the field every time.

My first Wing Drop Stall was “Over Cooked” and I almost went into a spiral dive as I added in aileron too soon and almost snap-rolled. A bit of a “Brown Trousers” moment but I did recover it in the end.

My slow flight was good and I managed to control the turns well.

Climbs and Descents were all within standard and my overhead join was fine also.

Landing was still a wee bit off as I drifted across the runway a bit as I didn’t give it enough into wind aileron. Not earth shattering but I would like to clean that up so I “butter” the landing.

My main take-away from today was that I was again 90% consistent, accurate and safe so I was stoked.

Next lesson I  will fly with the CFI to get his take on my progress.

I can really feel my skills progressing ever closer to a consistent flight test standard. I’m so close now. As Dory would say ” just keep swimming…….”

Until next time…
