Revision to Date
Totally enjoyed getting up in ZK-WRA on Saturday: Fantastic weather and a really good session of training. I am feeling a lot better now that my landings are starting to get more consistent (Jacobsen Flare Technique just works people!) However I do need to work on that right rudder at power up though as that ” left hook” was quite nasty (weather cocking is not my friend!) Always something to work on.
My instructor Clemente ran me thru almost all of our training to date. The pace of that session was almost perfect as I had time to refresh procedures and it kept the concentration levels right up there.
Covering off basics in the training area and migrating to “follow the river” reinforces training very well. The overhead join was great fun as by then I had a good feel for ZK-WRA whilst learning something new. To follow this up with circuits once joined downwind was perfect. I could use current training to do touch and goes and really confirm if I have the skills consistent or not. That is the essence of training in my mind: to confirm current skills and add just enough new stuff. Bloody awesome!
It was some challenge for me to fly without gyroscopic instruments in ZK-WRA however.
As a trainee Pilot I use these instruments to confirm my attitude and heading. During this flight I had to adjust to a point on the horizon for heading and use a relationship between horizon and the top of the instrument panel to reference attitude in turns. All great alternatives to instruments and a good way to use a secondary reference if instruments fail. However I do have some hours up ( a massive 23hrs) and can adjust ok. My concern is for the new ab-initio pilots just starting out. I know I had better situational awareness when I had these instruments as well as a sight picture. I suggested to my Instructor that perhaps these could be added to ZK-WRA to assist these new Guys and Gals?
All up I am very happy compared to my last flight which was basically awful. We all have bad days team, it’s what we learn from those days that builds our character and determination.
Until next time….
