Blog – Low Flying and Precautionary Landings 08/10/2023
Due to typical New Zealand spring weather, it has been almost a month since my last flight.
Today we concentrated on low flying and precautionary landings with a few other tasks thrown in for practice.
First up was a short take-off from RWY 010 which I have never used before. This is a grass runway right on the doorstep of the Aero club so almost no taxiing required to get to the run up area.
Short take off is similar to standard with the exception of standing on the brakes until full power established then letting them go. Also required is to keep the front wheel as light as possible on the runway until take-off.
I managed this task without any issues. This was a good start for the session.
Once at height in the training area, we did our HASELL checks and commenced a few stalls. All of these were done with no issues and at PPL level. Nice!
Next up was some level turns which again was done fairly well: Almost PPL level.
Once these were completed we dropped down to low level and commenced practising low flying. This included slow flight, reversal turns, turns to a reference and finally precautionary landings.
As I have not done this in the Tecnam, it was quite a challenge to keep it all smooth and to standards. On this I failed. However, by the end of the session I was much better at the tasks. A good start anyway.
Once low flying was completed, we cleaned up the aircraft and climbed to altitude, ready for a standard overhead join. This was performed ok but I let the aircraft drop a bit low coming into the circuit. Bugger!
Last action was to attempt a power off landing. I was ok with the downwind but left the height and flaps too late so had a very steep decent onto the runway. At least the landing wasn’t hard but strange not to have power as an option.
Overall, I was happy with this flight. A great challenge and made me work hard to fly correctly.
We now have a good baseline to work from.
Bring it on!!
